In terms of the Asbestos Regulations
promulgated under Act No. 85 of 1993 all South African property
owners are required to survey their properties at regular intervals
and maintain an inventory of all asbestos that forms part of the
structure of workplace, building, plant or premises.

PURPOSE OF SURVEYS |
- Positively identify asbestos or asbestos cement products (ACPs) and
the location thereof inside and outside your buildings.
- Draft an inventory thereof.
- Assess the potential of exposure to the identified asbestos present
- Estimate costs for your budget purposes to treat (encapsulate) or
replace identified asbestos.
- Make recommendation regarding the above.

METHODOLOGY |
In situ inspection to examine and ascertain whether material is indeed
asbestos or asbestos related products by physical inspection as follows:
- Using magnifying equipment to perform observations as well as microscopic
laboratory investigation if required.
- General observations for known products – ACPs
- Assess and report on the potential for exposure.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS |
The survey to be performed in terms of the Asbestos Regulations promulgated
under ACT No. 85 of 1993. The regulations specify clearly the requirements
that are applicable, as follows:
- Take reasonable steps to determine (identify) the location of asbestos
in the workplace, buildings and plant on your premises.
- Compile and maintain a written inventory of the location of the asbestos
in the workplace and related areas.
- Regularly examine the condition of the asbestos in the inventory for
deterioration and damage
- Assess the risk of exposure to the asbestos identified.
- Repeat the assessment at regular intervals (not exceeding two years)
